George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series has become, in many ways, the gold standard for modern epic fantasy. Martin--dubbed the "American Tolkien" by Time magazine--has created a world that is as rich and vital as any piece of historical fiction, set in an age of knights and chivalry and filled with a plethora of fascinating, multidimensional characters that you love, hate to love, or love to hate as they struggle for control of a divided kingdom. It is this very vitality that has led it to be adapted as the HBO miniseries "Game of Thrones."

This boxed set includes the following novels:
A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows

At the start of Hamilton's exceptional debut, set in Boston in 1773, Abigail Adams stumbles on an unknown woman's bloody corpse while paying a call on her friend and fellow patriot, Rebecca Malvern, who later goes missing. When it looks as if Abigail's irascible husband, John, may be accused of the murder, she sets out to clear his name. The trail takes her through the streets of colonial Boston and into the surrounding towns. Meanwhile, political unrest and opposition to the English crown grows. Working with both the Sons of Liberty and loyalists, Abigail bridges the gap between them as she investigates the murder and searches for Rebecca. While bringing to life such historical figures as Sam Adams and Paul Revere, Hamilton transports the reader to another time and place with close attention to matters like dress, menus and the monumental task of doing laundry. Historical fans will eagerly look forward to the next in this promising series.

Maddie lives in a world where everything is done on the computer. Work, school, even dating can be done from home, and people do not venture out. Maddie plays soccer, and likes the physicallity and comaraderie of team sports, but for the most part, she's okay with the solitary, digital life—until she meets Justin.

Justin likes being with people. He enjoys the physical closeness of face-to-face interactions. People aren't meant to be alone, he tells her.

Suddenly, Maddie feels something awakening inside her—a feeling that maybe there is a different, better way to live. And maybe it's his attentiveness, or the physical closeness of actually being with someone, or just that he's very good looking, but Madie is definitely drawn to Justin.

Then Madie uncovers the truth. Justin belongs to a group that wants to change the world, starting with destroying Digital School. Madeline's father created DS, and they know she doesn't fully support her dad's work. Plus, she can hack into his computer.

Madie feels used. Is Justin only with her because of who her father is? Or does he really have feelings for her as well?

In this book Tibetan Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön offers short, stand-alone readings designed to help us cultivate compassion and awareness amid the challenges of daily living. More than a collection of thoughts for the day, Comfortable with Uncertainty offers a progressive program of spiritual study. Inspired by the Buddhist tradition of the 108-day retreat, the book leads the reader through essential concepts, themes, and practices on the Buddhist path. Comfortable with Uncertainty does not assume prior knowledge of Buddhist thought or practice, making it a perfect introduction to Chödrön's teaching.

It features the most essential and stirring passages from Chödrön's previous books, exploring topics such as lovingkindness, meditation, mindfulness, "nowness," letting go, and working with fear and other painful emotions. Through the course of this book, readers will learn practical methods for heightening awareness and overcoming habitual patterns that block compassion. Comfortable with Uncertainty, like a set of prayer beads, strings together 108 gems that will guide and inspire us.

There were no taxis.

Clare Frayn stumped back and forth on Catharine Street, shivering. The July night was mild, the entire street was orange as embers beneath the sodium streetlamps, yet she was shivering. She glanced at her watch. Four oclock, good God. No wonder she was cold; her body was at its lowest ebb. Even Rob had never kept her up so late before. In a minute shed chance the brakes in Ringo the Reliant and drive him home.

He was standing at the corner of Catharine Street and Canning Street, a block away, leaning his long body into the road whenever a distant motor whirred. Beside him traffic lights blinked emptily; beyond him glowed the will-o-the-wisp of a disordered telephone box. Around them both, in the Georgian terraces of Liverpool 8, poets and artists slepthalf of them drunk and snoring, no doubt, Clare thought. Rob looked back at her over his shoulder and smiled, encouraging, embarrassed. Then he leaned out again.

Who else would have such a fool for a brother, Clare thought with a kind of irritable resigned affection. Stop leaning out, for Gods sake. There are no taxis. No sound at all, except for a ships low tone drifting sleepily up the Mersey from the sea. But there was: the sound of an engine; the unmistakable sound of a taxi labouring up Myrtle Street beyond the curve, beyond the Childrens Hospital. She began to run, cursing her short legs, slapping basement railings furiously with her hand, for speed. She reached the curve as the vehicle did, driving down the side street opposite, not up the hill at all. It was a lorry carrying its baby on its back.

Ramsey Campbell has won four World Fantasy Awards, ten British Fantasy Awards, and the Horror Writers' Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Publishers Weekly calls Campbell "a horror writer's horror writer," adding, "His control of mood and atmosphere is unsurpassed." The Cleveland Plain Dealer says his horror fiction is "of consistently high quality," and The Washington Post praises Campbell for continuing "to break new ground, advancing the style and thematic content of horror fiction far beyond the works of his contemporaries."

The original publication of Scared Stiff almost created the sub-genre of erotic horror. Never had sex and death been so mesmerizingly entwined. Clive Barker, in his Introduction, says, "One of the delightfully unsettling things about these tales is the way Ramsey's brooding, utterly unique vision renders an act so familiar to us all so fretful, so strange, so chilling. Sex . . . is the perfect stuff for the horror writer, and there can be few artists working in the genre as capable of analyzing and dramatizing [this] as Campbell."

For this edition, Campbell has added three new stories which have never before appeared in book form.

Ramsey Campbell has been acclaimed as a “master of dark fantasy” by Clive Barker, the “master of a skewed and exquisitely terrifying style” by Library Journal, “one of the world’s foremost horror writers” by the San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle, and a “master of mood” by Publishers Weekly. The Darkest Part of the Woods is contemporary dark fantasy, bordering on horror. It is evocative, emotional, and disturbing.

The Darkest Part of the Woods introduces the Price family, whose fates are entangled with the ancient forest of Goodmanswood. Dr. Lennox Price discovered a hallucinogenic moss that became the focus of a cult. After Lennox’s death, his widow seems to see and hear him in the trees—or is it a dark version of the Green Man that caresses her with leafy hands? Lennox’s grandson heeds a call to lie in his lover’s arms in the very heart of the forest—and cannot help but wonder what the fruit of that love will be.

And Heather, Lennox’s daughter, who turned her back on her father’s mysteries and sought sanctuary in the world of facts and history? Goodmanswood summons her as well....

Ramsey Campbell has won a dozen British Fantasy and World Fantasy Awards and three Bram Stoker Awards. A new Campbell novel is an opportunity to delight in the craftsmanship of an extraordinary writer.

Bova is best known as a prolific writer of works of science fiction. Here he tries his hand at supposedly historical fiction, with interesting, enjoyable, but uneven results. Lukka, a Hittite warrior, returns to the Hittite capital city to find it engulfed in civil war, his father murdered, and his wife and two young sons taken away by slavers. Along with a small cadre of soldiers under his command, Lukka launches an epic search for his family, which leads him to the gates of Troy as it is beseiged by the army of Agamemnon. Bova then proceeds to an original retelling of the final stages of the legendary Trojan War. In this account, Lukka serves as a literary mirror, revealing the personalities of some well-known characters, with a few surprising results. Odysseus, predictably, is practical, crafty, and a natural survivor in treacherous waters. Achilles is a born killer, but he is shown as short and ugly, and his death is decidedly unheroic. Helen is, of course, the babe of all babes, but she is also petty and whiny. Bova tends to use flowery, descriptive language to excess, but he knows his Homer.

Publisher: Quirk Books; Original edition (September 1, 2009) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 1594744424 | EPUB + MOBI | 344 pages | 4 mb + 3 mb

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters expands the original text of the beloved Jane Austen novel with all-new scenes of giant lobsters, rampaging octopi, two-headed sea serpents, and other biological monstrosities. As our story opens, the Dashwood sisters are evicted from their childhood home and sent to live on a mysterious island full of savage creatures and dark secrets. While sensible Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars, her romantic sister Marianne is courted by both the handsome Willoughby and the hideous man-monster Colonel Brandon. Can the Dashwood sisters triumph over meddlesome matriarchs and unscrupulous rogues to find true love? Or will they fall prey to the tentacles that are forever snapping at their heels? This masterful portrait of Regency England blends Jane Austen’s biting social commentary with ultraviolent depictions of sea monsters biting. It’s survival of the fittest—and only the swiftest swimmers will find true love!

Publisher: Picador (May 20, 2005) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0330488902 | EPUB + MOBI | 200 pages | 0.5 mb + 0.4 mb

Not even death can keep two brothers from meeting to play ball: it sounds like a sentimental TV movie, doesn't it? Actually, Sherwood's second novel (after The Man Who Ate the 747) is warmhearted but not maudlin, exploring the bonds between the living and the dead and the lengths to which we'll go for love. A secret jaunt to a Sox game ends in tragedy when Charlie St. Cloud, who isn't old enough for a driver's license, crashes the car he pinched from a neighbor. The hearts of Charlie and his younger brother, Sam, stop, but miraculously, Charlie is resuscitated. Thirteen years later, Charlie is 28 and working as the caretaker for the Marblehead cemetery where Sam is buried; he's also spending every evening playing catch with the ghost of 12-year-old Sam, who's putting off going to heaven for the game. Charlie's world gets shaken up, though, by feisty, beautiful Tess Carroll, a sailor who had plans to be one of the first women to circumnavigate the globe solo. They have a perfect date, and sparks fly. But then news comes that her boat is lost at sea, and Charlie, whose gift of seeing spirits has grown, realizes that her fading apparition is the result of a failing effort to rescue her. Sherwood tugs at readers' heartstrings throughout the novel, and the sentimentality mostly works. Charlie's final effort to save his lady love from ghostly oblivion strains credibility, of course, but isn't that the point of a tale about love triumphant?

John Smith is a Keeper of Records for the world-famous Book of Records. For the past 14 years, he has traveled the globe to verify records in innumerable categories, making his work the family that he does not have. When he gets news of a man in Superior, NE, who is eating a 747, he drives there to check it out. Although gluttony records have been banned by the Committee of The Book, Smith finds that the plane is being eaten for love and asks for special dispensation from the Committee. Wally Chubb's eating of the 747 is actually his latest and greatest attempt to get Willa Wyatt to fall in love with himDan attempt he started when he was ten. When Smith meets Willa, he forgets everything he thought he knew about love and soon realizes that in this category everyone sets his or her own record. Sherwood, senior producer for the NBC Nightly News, has written numerous articles as an investigative journalist. This novel confirms his ability to craft characters that live and breathe. This well-written debut is romantic, suspenseful, ridiculous, and, finally, satisfying. Recommended.

Publisher: Picador (January 22, 2008) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0312426321 | EPUB + MOBI | 369 pages | 0.3 mb + 0.4 mb

Christine Falls may be Benjamin Black's debut crime novel, but it's not his first book: Black is the nom de plumeof John Banville, the Booker Prize?winning author of The Sea (****1/2 Jan/Feb 2006). As expected, Banville's lyrical writing stands out (and is more accessible than in The Sea), but the expressive style doesn't eclipse the dark, suspenseful plot. Set during the all-powerful reign of the Catholic Church, the novel touches on themes of sexual repression, grief, and lost opportunities. Readers expecting a fast-paced crime novel may initially be surprised by Banville's slow, deliberate rendering of the plot and the complex characters—but they will certainly look forward to the next novel in this projected series.

If Elegy for April isn't the author's best book to date, it certainly boasts the elements for which he is known: a brooding, dark main character; a literary elegance; and, most of all, an evocation of a gloomy Dublin in which "class and religious divisions and [the city's] urgent, albeit repressed, sexual atmospheres helps his characters spring from the page" (Los Angeles Times). The only major point of contention was the plot, which a couple of critics felt was too contrived and slow. ("Mystery plotting is hardly [Banville's] primary concern," noted the New York Times.) But if readers won't lie awake turning the pages, they will cherish Banville's style. "When English prose looks like it's dying, the critic Cyril Connolly once said, an Irishman comes along with something to revive it and demolish the clichés" (Los Angeles Times).

In this stunning follow-up to 2007's Christine Falls, Black (pseudonym of Booker Prize–winner John Banville) spins a complex tale of murder and deception in 1950s Ireland. Pathologist Garret Quirke, surprised by a visit from a college acquaintance, Billy Hunt, is even more surprised when Billy begs Quirke not to perform an autopsy on his wife, Deirdre, whose naked body was recently retrieved from Dublin Bay. Though everything points to suicide, Quirke knows something's amiss and begins to retrace Deirdre's steps. Black expertly balances Quirke's investigation with chapters detailing Deidre's past, from her marriage to Billy to her shady business deal with Leslie White, an enigmatic Englishman who knew Deidre as Laura Swan, the proprietress of their joint venture, a beauty salon called the Silver Swan. As Quirke digs deeper, he discovers a web of lies and blackmail that threatens to envelop even his own estranged daughter, Phoebe. Laconic, stubborn Quirke makes an appealing hero as the pieces of this unsettling crime come together in a shocking conclusion.

Enslaved, along with his brothers, by the invading Harn, Llesho finds his way to freedom and embarks on a quest to find and free his brothers and liberate his conquered homeland of Thebin. Accompanied by a strange group of companions, including a trickster god, a youthful witch and her father, and a pair of his brothers, Llesho travels from country to country in search of a way to control his strange dream magic and use it to attain his seemingly unreachable goal. Set in a world that resembles a fantasy version of medieval China, this sequel to The Prince of Shadow features a cast of intriguing characters and a fluid approach to magic that is reminiscent of Asian folk tales. A good choice for most fantasy collections.
